Stockhausens' parents (Franz Stockhausen Snr. (1792-1868),
harpist andcomposer , andMargarethe Stockhausen née Schmuck,soprano ) were musicians of some ability who recognized his talent and encouraged his development. Before he had reached his twentieth year he was an excellent performer upon thepiano , organ,violin , andcello . In 1845 he entered theParis Conservatoire, where he studied piano with Hall and Stamaty and singing with Manuel García. In 1849 he continued his studies with Garcia inLondon . He quickly won fame as a remarkable concert singer (baritone). From 1862 to 1869 he resided inHamburg as conductor of thePhilharmonic Society andSingakademie . The next five years he spent inStuttgart asKammersnger to the King ofWrttemberg , then he became conductor of Stern's Gesangverein atBerlin , where he remained until 1878, being then called toHoch Conservatory atFrankfurt as professor of singing. Differences with Raff, the director, led to his resignation the following year and the establishment of his own school, which immediately became world famous. After Raff's death (1882), Stockhausen returned to the conservatory, but continued his own school. Students of Stockhausen includeJenny Hahn ,Johannes Messchaert (also: Johan),Hermine Spies ,Horatio Connell and Max Friedlaender. He wrote an excellent "Gesangsmethode" (1884), translated into English by his pupil Sophie Lwe (1884). His brotherFranz Stockhausen jnr. was an eminent choral conductor who studied with Alkan andMoscheles . His daughter, Julia Wirth née Stockhausen, married the famous German violinistEmanuel Wirth . She was the author of Stockhausen's biography.Works
