This article describes the geography of the town of Gosport.
Gosport is a town inHampshire , on the south coast ofEngland .Gosport lies on the
peninsula which forms the western side ofPortsmouth harbour .At the southern tip of Gosport is
Gilkicker Point where a fort lies calledFort Gilkicker . West of here isStokes Bay .On the easternside of the town, on the west shore of Portsmouth Harbour are a number of named districts. From north to south, these are
Elson ,Hardway andPriddy's Hard . The large southeastern district of Gosport is called Newtown.South of Newtown is
Haslar Creek , which flows into Portsmouth Harbour near the harbour mouth. The lowest part of Haslar Creek is called Haslar Lake; at its western end, the creek splits into two branches. These are called Workhouse Lake (the northern branch) and Stoke Lake (the southern branch). South of Stoke Lake and north of Gilkicker Point is the district of Clayhall.Northwest of Stoke Lake is
Alverstoke , to the west of which isBrowndown , where theRiver Alver now flows into Stokes Bay. Further west from Browndown training camp isLee-on-the-Solent with the formerRNAS Daedalus , now home to a hovercraft museum.In the west of Gosport are the
HMS Sultan base, at the west end of which is a large sports field called HMS Sultan Polo Fields. North of here is the district ofRowner . North of central Gosport, along the A32 are two other named districts,Bridgemary , which lies just to the north of the centre, andFleetlands , at the northend end of the town.External links
