The American Gear Manufacturers' Association or AGMA is the responsible authority for the dissemination of the knowledge pertaining to the design and analysis of gearing. The methods that AGMA presents are in universal use when strength and durability of gears are the primary considerations. Its slogan is "Technology Driven. Globally Connected."

History of AGMA

AGMA was founded in 1916 as a member and market driven organization to conduct programs and provide services to the gear industry. There are currently more than 400 AGMA member companies from over 30 countries around the world.

AGMA is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to write all U.S. standards on gearing. In 1993, AGMA became the Secretariat for Technical Committee 60 (TC 60) of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). TC 60 is the committee responsible for developing all international gearing standards. In addition to the position of Secretariat, AGMA also chairs one-third of the active ISO Working Groups related to gearing.

Services of AGMA

AGMA provides a number of services to members and customers of the gearing industry. These include the development of gearing standards by its 25 Technical Committees and the educational opportunities available through the Business Management Councils.

AGMA's Statistical Council offers several programs, the Monthly Market Trend Report (MMTR), Operating Ratio Report (ORR), and Wage & Benefit Survey (W&B), to inform companies how they are performing compared to the rest of the field. These programs are free of charge to members who decide to participate and all results are kept confidential.

AGMA hosts the industy's trade show, Gear Expo, every two years. Gear Expo 2007 will be held in Detroit, Michigan's Cobo Center from October 7th to 10th.

AGMA runs a Fall Technical Meeting (FTM) in which members are presented with the latest publications and technical research. The FTM is an annual technical symposium and will be held concurrently with the 2007 Gear Expo in Detroit. In other years it is held at various locations across the country.
