Karelides is the ancient
mountain chain, which located betweenEastern Finland and Lapland. It formed current hill zone of Eastern Finland and Lapland's Arctic hills splitting the Centre Finland. Karelidit formed about 2000 million years ago, when thicksandstone sediments rocked and then folded whencontinental plate s smashed. This made a ridge made ofquartzite , which has stood there not caring ofice age s consume and weathering. Mountains in the very north-west Finnish Lapland belong to the newerScandinavian Mountains , and because of that they are higher than other Finnish mountains. The third mountain group isSvecofennides , which stood there fromSouthern Finland toSweden .
