Lakai Footwear Limited is a footwear company based in Sacramento,California that creates shoes designed for and inspired by skateboarding. Lakai was founded by professional skateboarders and Girl Skateboards co-founders Mike Carroll and Rick Howard in 1999. They felt they could make a contribution to the skate-footwear world by running their own company rather than riding for someone else's. The company was formed after both riders left DC Shoes.

The name Lakai is short for Malakai which is Mike Carroll's nickname. On May 1, 2006, Eric Koston officially signed with Lakai after leaving éS Footwear at the end of 2005 after choosing not to renew his contract when éS owners Pierre André and Don Brown declined to give Koston part ownership in the company. Lakai's first video, 'Beware of the Flare', was released in June 2002 [ [http://www.crailtap.com/features/bewareoftheflare/ Beware Of The Flare! ] ] . Their next video 'Fully Flared' premiered on November 16, 2007. It was released on DVD on December 7, 2007. It went on to receive the Years Best Video Award from The Skateboard Mag and the best video award at the 10th Transworld Skateboarding Awards.

Lakai Limited Footwear is part of the Girl Distribution family, along with the afforementioned Girl Skateboards, Chocolate Skateboards, Royal Trucks, Fourstar Clothing Co, Ruby Clothing, Crailtap (Girl Distributions online hub for all of their brands) and newer board company Skate Mental. .
