St. Paul (oratorio)

Paulus (in English St. Paul) is the title of an oratorio by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. The libretto was written by Pastor Julius Schubring, a childhood friend, pulling together passages from the New Testament and Old Testament.

The oratorio, which is in two parts, begins with the martyrdom of St. Stephen, describes St Paul's conversion and narrates various incidents from his life.

"St. Paul" was premiered on May 22, 1836 at the Lower Rhine Music Festival in Dusseldorf. Numerous performances followed in Europe and later in the United States. The English premiere was in Liverpool in October 1836.

As a complete work, "St. Paul" is rarely performed. Lacking the popularity of oratorios such as Handel's Messiah, the Bach Christmas Oratorio or St Matthew Passion or even Mendelssohn's own Elijah of 1846.
