- Bendale
Bendale, also called Cedarbrae, is a neighbourhood in
Toronto ,Ontario ,Canada . Bendale is located in the eastern part of Toronto, Scarborough. Formerly the Borough of Scarborough, and later the City of Scarborough, it was merged with five othermunicipalities and a regional government to form the new "City of Toronto" in 1998. The area is ethnically diverse like much of Toronto, but has a greater proportion of South Asian population.A section of the neighbourhood is known as the "Ben Jungle", located north of Lawrence Avenue between McCowan and Bellamy Roads, where all the street names begin with Ben. Examples include:
*Benleigh, Benshire and Ben Nevis Drives
*Benfrisco, Benhur and Benorama Crescents
*Benadair and Benprice Courts
*Ben Stanton and Ben Doran Boulevards. The street layout of the "Ben Jungle" and the rest of Bendale discourages use of the streets as a thoroughfare by motorists or pedestrians as the main roads of McCowan, Lawrence Ave and Bellamy are more efficient. This layout has led to a feeling of living in a peaceful enclave by its residents as the only people there are those who live there. One resident noted that when leaving for a Christmas vacation, he was in such a rush that he forgot to lock the front door. Upon returning to the residence, he realized to his own horror that he forgot to close the door as well. However, the house and goods inside, including many valuables and cash openly visible, were still in place despite having an open door for two weeks. No one even noticed.
Schools in the area include Bendale Jr. P.S., North Bendale Jr. P.S., Bendale B.T.I., and
Cedarbrae Collegiate Institute ee also
