Hochschule (plural: "Hochschulen") is a German term referring to all instituations in the post-secondary
higher education system which grant academic degrees. The literal meaning is “"high school"”.Hochschulen are mainly equivalent to
universities in anglo-american education systems, as they award graduate and postgraduate degrees. Most of them are traditional universities ("Universitäten") orUniversities of Applied Sciences ("Fachhochschule n"). They award academic Bachelor's and Master's degrees according to theBologna process . Universities of Applied Sciences usually do not offer doctorate degrees.Recently, most "Fachhochschulen" are shorter named "Hochschule", though "Hochschule" is also the generic term for all types of universites in Germany.
