The University of the Balearic Islands ( _ca. Universitat de les Illes Balears; Spanish: "Universidad de las Islas Baleares") or UIB for short, is a Spanish university, founded in 1978 and located in Palma on the island of Majorca.

History

To find the origins of the establishment of the University in the Balearic Islands, we have to refer to the year 1483, the year in which the king Ferran II authorized the founding of the General Lulian Study (its name comes from Ramon Llull) in the city of Majorca, the first real college that took the Balearic Islands. This Centre was operational until [1835] , when, after intense debate between the Spanish government and society Majorcan finally got abolished. Since that time, all pupils in the Balearic Islands who wanted to continue higher education had to move up Cervera first and then to Barcelona.

Thus, the Balearic Islands had no institution dedicated to teaching higher until the twentieth century. Specifically, it was in 1949 when he returned to found the General Lulian Study under the auspices of the University of Barcelona, which for a time offered courses in philosophy and philology recognized by the UB. In 1972, it created the first two modern power: the science (depending on the Autonomous University of Barcelona) and the arts (attached to the University of Barcelona). These new centres settled in Son Malferit and in the old school of the Paüls, both in Palma. Later also created the law school, which stood at Edifici Sa Riera. These powers are segregated from their respective universities in 1978 and created, along with the Normal School (building above), the University of Palma.

In 1983 began work on a new campus on the road from Valldemossa, in the municipality of Palma. This decision was not exempta controversy, as not everyone liked the creation of a university campus rural American for the new University. Many defended the construction of the new campus within the town of Palma, in Polígon concret de Llevant, close to the original location of the Faculty of Sciences. This has been achieved revitalize an area of Palma still degraded and not untie the University of urban life. In 1993 he completed the transfer of power to the campus located in Palma i were created extensions universitaries of Ibiza and Alaior (Minorca), but today it still is not considered finished.

In 1985 it passed the Statute (which have been modified later), and the former name was changed to University of Palma by the current University of the Balearic Islands. In 1990 he created the Official School of Tourism, in 1992 the Faculty of Education and in 2000 the School of Psychology and the Polytechnic School. Avell lí Blasco, a professor of administrative law, was rector of the UIB from April 2003 to March 2007.

Dr. Montserrat Cases, Professor of Atomic, Molecular and Nuclear Physics leadership was elected in March 2007, after obtaining in the second round of elections on 59.45% of the votes compared with 40.55% who succeeded Dr. Sergio Alonso, professor of Meteorology, team member rectorate earlier and had worked with the Ministry of Education.
