Overview
Richmond High School is one of six comprehensive four-year public high schools in the West Contra Costa Unified School District. It is located at 1250 23rd Street in Richmond, California. As an urban high school, it reflects the social diversity of the community. The school accepts students from across the district, rather than limiting its enrollment to local boundaries. The local feeder school is Helms Intermediate.
The school intends to create a cluster of small learning communities in an effort to provide a supportive atmosphere for academic and technical preparation for graduates going on to higher education.
Alumni and Post-High School Education
Graduates from Richmond High School have attended a number of prestigeous higher education institutions. The school has a low straight to college rate, with many students choosing to attend a Community College and transfer to a University. Many students are unable to transfer, however, due to economic difficulty.
Ken Carter
Richmond came into the media in 1999 due to the actions taken by basketball coach Ken Carter. Carter, a former Richmond student himself cancelled all scheduled games and practices of the undefeated team in an unprecedented move due to fifteen of his players having unacceptably poor academic performance. Heavily crticised initially by students, parents, teachers and the media, he was then praised due to his emphasis on further education.
This media story was also the focal point of the 2005 film Coach Carter starring Samuel L. Jackson which gives a storylined account of Carter's time managing the team with the main focal point being on the "lock-out."
