Following her success during the 1970s with the group,
LaBelle , Patti LaBelle signed a solo deal withEpic Records . LaBelle endured a series of commercial failures, though gaining critical acclaim. Desiring popular success, she signed withGamble and Huff 's Philadelphia International Records, a subsidiary of Columbia Records, then CBS. Producer Dexter Wansel and songwriter Cynthia Biggs collaborated with lyrics and instrumental composition of the song with Gamble gaining writing credit by making minor edit to the lyrics.
