Haddonfield Friends School

Haddonfield Friends School

Haddonfield Friends School (also known as H.F.S.) is a private, Quaker coeducational day school located in Haddonfield, in Camden County, New Jersey, United States. The school serves students in prekindergarten through eighth grade.

Haddonfield Friends School is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Elementary Schools, and is a member of the New Jersey Association of Independent Schools [ [http://www.njais.org/listing.html School Search] , New Jersey Association of Independent Schools. Accessed July 29, 2008.] and the Association of Delaware Valley Independent Schools.

History

The school was founded in 1786 by members of the Religious Society of Friends to offer education in a setting that would honor Quaker values. A one-room brick building on Haddon Avenue, adjacent to the Meeting burial ground, housed the school. Haddonfield Free School, as they named it, served the children of both Friends and non-Friends, and was the only "public" school in Haddonfield for about 25 years.

Additional classroom space has also been provided at the Meeting House, located on Friends Avenue directly behind the school. In 2003, HFS acquired Boxwood Hall, the residence of John Estaugh Hopkins, a founder of Haddonfield Friends School. As of the 2007-2008 school year H.F.S has discontinued its use of Boxwood hall for safety reasons and is thinking of selling it. The issue was that the fire department required that there be a fire escape on the building while the historical society forbid this so it would stay historically accurate.
