Jim (Peter O'Toole), is an ambitious young Englishman who sets off as
first mate on the "S.S. Patna", amerchant ship traveling toMecca withMuslim pilgrims as passengers. A storm threatens the ship and the crew deserts on the ship's two lifeboats; Jim in a moment of weakness joins them. When they reach port, the sailors are stunned to find an intact "Patna" already there before them.There is a Royal Enquiry and Jim is the only one to stand trial. Racked with guilt, he admits his act of cowardice and is stripped of his papers. Filled with self-loathing, Jim becomes a drifter, taking small jobs in the Far East until Marlow (
Jack Hawkins ), a man Jim met during his trial, arranges for him to travel to a distant trading post in Patusan. Jim sees the voyage as an opportunity to redeem himself and move on with his life.Cast
