racing driver fromSurrey ,England , born in1952 . He raced in sports cars and touring cars at the top level for over 20 years. In 1983 he almost won theBritish Touring Car Championship before hisRover was deemed illegal. He finished as runner-up in the series in 1988 in aFord Sierra , and in 1993 behind team-mateJoachim Winkelhock forBMW . In 1997 he came second in theFIA GT Championship and was fifth in the one-offWorld Touring Car Championship in 1987.He has also competed in the European, Japanese and German Touring Car Championships. He won the
24 Hours Nürburgring in 1987, the24 Hours of Spa in 1995, and theGuia Race in 1997, many of these was through his long association withBMW , During the1999 24 Hours of Le Mans , he was known to express his dislike of the 24 hour classic.For 2001 he made a surprise return to the British Touring Car Championship for
Peugeot . The car was nowhere near as competitive as theVauxhall Astra , but Steve still finished 6th in a thin field, however he was advised to retire on medical grounds after a heavy crash in the final round.
