Billy-Montigny is a commune in the Pas-de-Calais "département" in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region of France.

Geography

An ex-coalmining industrial town situated just convert|4|mi|km|1 east of the centre of Lens at the junction of the N43 and D46 roads. The coal lasted just over 100 years, the last pits closing in the 1960s.

History

The history of the area remains marked by the mining disaster which resulted in 1,099 casualties on March 10, 1906 in the area of the communes of Billy-Montigny, Méricourt and Sallaumines.

In Billy-Montigny Communal Cemetery lie the bodies of two British soldiers of World War I.
* Denis Percival Beauchamp Taylor. MC. Lieutenant Royal Flying Corps. 3rd Sqdn. 3rd (King's Own) Hussars. In North part. Grave 1 (left hand side).
* George Thomas Paget, Private. 37915 18th Bn. Welsh Regiment. Died of wounds 19th July 1916. An under-aged soldier who was 17 years old. In North part. Grave 2 (right hand side).

* A Canadian soldier (unknown) is also buried at the cemetery.
