Stanley Keyworth

Stanley Keyworth

Stanley Keyworth is a fictional psychiatrist, played by Adam Arkin, who appears on the television serial drama "The West Wing". Making his first appearance in season 2, he reappeared in seasons 3 and 4.

Dr. Keyworth was first called in as a representative of the fictional American Trauma Victims Association to speak to then Deputy White House Chief of Staff Josh Lyman. Lyman's fellow White House staffers had become increasingly concerned about his mental state following his shooting in an assassination attempt by white supremacists on the President's personal aide, Charlie Young. After spending most of Christmas Eve 2000 speaking to Lyman, he diagnosed him with post-traumatic stress disorder, although he later said that he had actually diagnosed him within 5 minutes.

Keyworth was next seen providing advice to President Josiah Bartlet after White House Communications Director Toby Ziegler asked him about his relationship with his father on the night of the Iowa caucus. Following this conversation the President had been unable to sleep for 4 nights, leading to the calling in of Dr. Keyworth with the goal of curing his insomnia. Dr. Keyworth also was called in to see the President when President Bartlet was considering ordering the killing of Qumari Defence Minister Abdul Shareef, and when he was thinking about the morality of the assassination before the Christmas following his re-election.
