(Joseph) Stanley Holmes, 1st Baron Dovercourt (
31 October 1878 –22 April 1961 ) was a National Liberal Party politician in theUnited Kingdom .Born in
Marylebone , Holmes was educated at theCity of London School and was a chartered accountant and company director. He served as vice-president of the Building Societies Association and was a member of theLondon County Council 1910-19.Holmes served as
Member of Parliament for North East Derbyshire from 1918-1922 and for Harwich from 1935-1954, as a National Liberal and later as a National Liberal and Conservative. He introduced asPrivate Member's Bill s theInheritance (Family Provision) Act 1938 and theCoast Protection Act 1939 .He was elevated to the peerage as Baron Dovercourt on
18 January 1954 . He died in Marylebone aged 82.
