CBS affiliate based inGoodland, Kansas and serves the northwestern Kansas / southwestern Nebraska portion of the Wichita TV market (including Colby). It can also be seen in part of east-central Colorado. It is owned bySchurz Communications .KBSL is part of the Kansas Broadcasting System (KBS) network of CBS affiliates, repeating the signal of
KWCH-TV inWichita, Kansas , with local advertising and news inserts.KBSL's transmitter is located near Goodland, in the Mountain Time Zone. Prime-time in the "Mountain" part of KBSL's viewing area runs from 6PM to 9PM Mountain Time, as opposed to 7PM to 10PM Central. However, since it is a translator station in the Wichita market, the schedule remains on Central time.
On April 28, 1959, KLOE-TV signed on the air from "Broadcast Plaza" in Goodland, co-located with KLOE-AM 730. For many years, the station provided full coverage of local news from a tiny studio on the west edge of the community. The building was originally only large enough for the radio station, so owner Ross Beach bumped up the ceiling half-a-story to accommodate television lighting. The stations "Tri-State Report" was a local news staple for many years.
Following its purchase by
Cowles Publishing Company , KLOE-TV separated from radio, but only in ownership. The two facilities were still co-located well into the 1990s, when the stations call letters changed to KBSL-TV. Most of the stations operations were moved to KBSH-TV in Hays, and the local news department was reduced to a one-person reporter/photographer crew. Daily news stories are fed via microwave to KWCH in Wichita, which produces all the news product for KBSL, as well as supplying commercial scheduling and Master Control operations. KBSL maintains a single news reporter in a sales office in Goodland. On April 6, 2006, previous owner
Media General announced that, in addition to acquiring four NBC owned-and-operated stations, Media General will be selling four of its TV stations. KWCH (including its satellites, which all count as one station) was one of them [http://www.media-general.com/press/2006/april6_06.htm] ; a deal has been made for them to be sold to Schurz, who completed the acquisition onSeptember 25 2006 .
