Foremole

Foremole

Foremole is a title applying to several characters in the Redwall novels by Brian Jacques. Derived from the term foreman, it designates the leader of the moles who live at Redwall Abbey. In the beginning of the series, the character was just called "Foremole," however later on Jacques began naming individual Foremoles.

The title was first bestowed by Martin the Warrior.

Notable Foremoles

Each Foremole is described, followed in parentheses by the novel(s) in which he/she appears.

Foremole (Mossflower)

Foremole was the male mole leader of the Mossflower mole tribe. Foremole's main deputy was Billum, who occasionally stepped in when Foremole was not present.

One of the main members of the Corim, he participated in many of the scuffles against Tsarmina Greeneyes. His tunnels allowed him and his team of moles to rescue archers, such as Columbine, in order to bring them back safely to Brockhall. Foremole assisted Abbess Germaine in surveying the structural weaknesses of Kotir, and together with Old Dinny he planned and supervised the flood tunnels into the fortress.

He was voiced by Ron Delacruz.

Dinny

Young Dinny was the grandson of Old Dinny and had inherited all of his grandsire's talents. He was an excellent digger and the grandfather of Togget. Dinny was also a good thinker, assisting with the riddles that Gonff the Mousethief and Martin the Warrior had to solve to get to Salamandastron. He accompanied them on their journey, and helped them out of many tight spots. Dinny also made friends among the Bat Mountpit tribe. They considered him to be a fat bat with no wings. Dinny liked the idea, reasoning that he could "fly through the earth".

Later on, when the three friends were stuck in the Screamhole, he exercised his digging ability when he dug almost straight up, retrieved a large net, and allowed them all to escape. He later became the first Foremole of Redwall Abbey.

He was voiced by Simon Smithies in "Mossflower".

Togget

Togget was the grandson of Young Dinny, Foremole of Redwall Abbey, and friend of Bryony. He was a trustworthy mole who risked his life helping Bryony on her journey to find Veil Sixclaw. He was wounded in the battle at Bat Mountpit by a rat's arrow.

Foremole (Mariel of Redwall, The Bellmaker)

During the siege of Redwall Abbey by Greypatch and his crew, Foremole and the moles under him proved a great help, first taking turns in fire-fighting crews and later helping Colonel Clary rescue six slaves from under the noses of the attackers by digging an underground tunnel to the camp and saving them. After the siege was over, he and his crew helped in repairing the Abbey. He was good friends with Gabriel Quill, the cellar hog, with whom he sampled many beverages.

Later in "The Bellmaker" he travelled to Southsward with Rufe Brush, Joseph the Bellmaker, Hon Rosie and Durry Quill to help Mariel and Dandin.

He was voiced by Ron Delacruz.

Foremole (Salamandastron)

Foremole was the leader of the moles in Redwall Abbey. Like all moles he was kind and sensible and he had an instinctive ability to predict weather. He was responsible for locking all the wallgates after dark, and he helped to wash Thura and Dingeye when the two stoats arrived in Redwall.

He was voiced by Ron Delacruz.

Foremole (Redwall, Mattimeo)

During the Late Rose Summer Wars, Foremole and his crew assisted Matthias and Methuselah in their quest to retrieve the sword of Martin the Warrior by opening up the passageway to Martin's tomb.

Eight seasons later during the Summer of the Golden Plain, Foremole and his crew dug supply tunnels when the Redwallers were besieged in Cavern Hole by Ironbeak's flock.

He's voiced by Brian Jacques and Ron Delacruz in the full-cast audiobooks of "Redwall" and "Mattimeo" respectively and by Graham Haley on the Redwall TV series.

Foremole (The Pearls of Lutra)

Foremole was an elder of Redwall Abbey during the time of Abbot Durral. He assisted Furlo Stump in the cellars with beverage brewing quite often.

Foremole also went with Martin II, Wullger, Rollo, Abbot Durral, and Friar Higgle Stump to investigate the skeleton of Graylunk in Mossflower Woods.

Diggum

Diggum was a young mole of Redwall Abbey. He was one of Arven's primary Dibbun friends with whom he liked to stir up trouble and make mischief. He was also good friends with another mole Dibbun, Gurrbowl. As an adult, Diggum became Foremole of Redwall.

Brull

Brull was noted as one of the very rare female Foremoles. However, she still displayed all the common sense and good logic of her kind.

Gundil

Gundil was a mole of Redwall Abbey. His grandfather owned a flagon shaped like a mole, which led to him identifying a squirrel-shaped flagon which had a puzzle from Abbess Songbreeze Swifteye in it. Although he didn't think himself bright, with his mole logic he helped Mhera and Cregga Rose Eyes to unravel the puzzle.

After his predecessor, Brull, retired the position, Gundil became Foremole. He was very afraid of heights, but he was a fairly good runner, as he managed to win in the grass section of the wall race. Gundil also was a good cook, and helped produce the "filboonimgun" cheese along with Filorn, Boorab the Fool and Nimbalo the Slayer.

He was voiced by Ron Delacruz.

Dwurl

Dwurl was an old male mole of Redwall Abbey and a leader of moles. He was a good friend of Abbot Carrul and he was in charge of the preparations of the sport contest and Summer Feast. Dwurl was one of the wall guards with Junty, Toran and Brother Weld whilst Badredd with his vermin gang besieged the Abbey. He and his crew dug the grave for Junty, and Dwurl helped to defend Redwall Abbey against vermin.

He was voiced by Ron Delacruz.

Bruffy

Bruffy organized the sewing of camouflage garments for Rakkety Tam MacBurl, Skipper of Otters and the Long Patrol hares going with them. Bruffy took part in the defense of Redwall Abbey, and along with Sister Screeve, he slew a fox, one of Freeta's gang.

He was voiced by Ron Delacruz.

Grudd Longtunnel

Grudd Longtunnel served as Foremole and head Abbey gardener at Redwall Abbey. He was Molemum Burbee's nephew, and often served her and her friend Abbess Lycian tea on the walltops.

Grudd and his molecrew served several useful purposes around the Abbey. When the summer storm ripped through the Abbey grounds and gardens, the moles were there at the forefront of the repairs. When Groffgut's gang nearly scrabbled over the walltops, Grudd told the rest of the beasts to relax -- he and his moles would stand guard. When Girry, Brinty, Tribsy, Old Quelt and Sister Snowdrop found out that a crucial book in their investigation of the High Rhulain was lodged under the Gatehouse bed, Grudd and some assistants retrieved it. When Brinty was slain, it was Grudd, his crew and his aunt who dressed his body for burial.

He was voiced by Ron Delacruz.
