Current Research: Understanding cognitive processing during sleep and understanding the treatment of insomnia. The evaluation of whether teaching sleep-improvement techniques to substance-abusing adolescents reduces recidivism.
Past Research: In 1972, Bootzin developed the stimulus-control approach to treating insomnia. This approach is based on the assumption that both the timing (bedtime) and setting (bed/bedroom) associated with repeated unsuccessful sleep attempts, over time become cues that maintain the insomnia. As a result, the goal of this treatment is to re-associate the bed and bedroom with successful sleep attempts. Stimulus control achieves this by curtailing sleep-incompatible activities in the bed and bedroom and by establishing a consistent sleep-wake schedule. (taken from the American Insomnia Association)
