Film career

Initially he played all roles including lead roles but with time the roles he got were mainly those with a shade of grey.

"Chaudhvin Ka Chand" and "Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam" and "Waqt" were some of his memorable roles, the first two with Guru Dutt. He was a regular in Guru Dutt films ( Pyaasa) as they were friends while trying for a break into films. He received four Filmfare nominations as Best Supporting Actor for: Yahudi (1958), Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960), Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962), Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya (1966) .
