This is the story of a family who has everything, money, fame, power. Lala Kadarnath (
Balraj Sahni ) has 3 sons whose birthdays are on the same day. So as they do every year, they hold a grand party. There is a well known astrologer at the party. For all the guests' pleasure, Lala Kadarnath has his palm read by the astrologer. He predicts harsh times for him, but Lala Kadarnath pays no mind and laughs at him. At the end of the day when all the guests have gone home, Lala Kadarnath proclaims to his wife (Achala Sachdev ) that he wants them to be even richer. As he talks of the day when people shout after his car, "There goes Lala Kadarnath!!!!", there is a sudden earthquake and the whole town crumbles into ruins. When Lala Kadarnath regains consciousness, his house has been destroyed and his family is gone. Their oldest son, Raju, (Raj Kumar ) gets sent to an orphanage where the manager (Jivan ) beats him a lot. Their middle son, Ravi, (Sunil Dutt ) is found on the road by a rich couple who takes him to their home to raise him as his own. Their youngest son, Vijay, (Shashi Kapoor ) who is still an infant, is with his mother Laxmi but they wander around looking for Lala Kadarnath and the rest of their family. She eventually gets a job and finds a place to stay but is barely scraping along. Lala Kadarnath finally comes to the orphanage where Raju is and is happy to see that he is in their records. As he quickly goes to take him with him, he finds out that Raju ran away that very day because of constant beatings from the sadistic manager. When Lala Kadarnath is told this, he strangles the manager for beating his son. The manager dies and Lala Kadarnath is sent to jail. The rest of the story is pretty much about how all three brothers are so close together but they do not realize that they are related. In the end, the family reunites and they reopen their business and live happily ever after.Awards & Nominations
