- Terrigenous
In
oceanography , terrigenoussediment s are those derived from the erosion of rocks on land; that is, that are derived from "terrestrial" environments.(Pinet, 79) Consisting ofsand ,mud , andsilt carried to sea byriver s, their composition is usually related to their source rocks; deposition of these sediments is largely limited to thecontinental shelf .(Pinet, 79-83)Sources of terrigenous rocks include volcanoes, weathering of rocks, wind-blown dust, grinding by glaciers, and sediment carried by icebergs.
75% of sediments are terrigenous- it is present everywhere.
