"The Nature of Jade" is a story about a teenager who lives near Seattle, Washington. Jade is a senior who takes many AP classes while passing all with flying colors, different friends who have changed dramatically over all the time she's known, and a panic anxiety, only calmed by cough drops, thinking of the desert, and elephants. Her mother tries to stay young and hip, volunteering for everything at her school, going to more proms than Jade has, her father is a stereotype, thinking girls may do sports and it's mandatory for boys to do sports, pushing her little brother to do all kinds of sport activities. Her 9-year-old brother Oliver loves reading Narnia and thinks nearly all sports are dumb and harmful. Jade escapes her imperfect world by watching the local zoo's elephants from a webcam in her room. One day, she spies a boy in a red jacket with a baby. Sebastian is his name. He had a very complicated story. Jade learns a secret that can change her life. Should she listen to her heart and do what feels right or do what is right? It is a story about animals and humans and our collective "nature."

"Wild Roses" takes place near Seattle, Washington, and is about teenager Cassie Morgan, future astronomer, who wishes to receive approval from her stepfather, the famous violinist and composer Dino Cavalli. At first Cassie is irritated but then she becomes afraid of the demon that lurks in his soul. He's a brilliant composer but a maniac at the same time, suffering with depression. Cassie knows this and despises him. One day, a boy enters Dino's study. His name is Ian Waters, a boy around Cassie's age. He has moved from California with his mom, and is taking violin lessons from Dino so he can go to The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Since Ian's father died and didn't leave any money behind, he and his mother had been living in a car due to debt, until his stepbrothers take them in. Getting into Curtis is his only chance at supporting himself and his mom. Dino warns Cassie to stay away from him, so he can focus on his playing. Ian will only be staying for a few months, and Cassie knows she can't get attached to him. But the farther she tries to stay away from him, the closer they get...after all, how can she stay away from a boy who understands her more than anyone else she knows? The two finally end up going steady, but the hardest part is making sure Dino doesn't find out...can they keep their relationship a secret forver? Or will Dino end up finding out? Wild Roses was a Finalist for the Scandiuzzi Children's Book Award for Middle Grades/Young Adults of the 2006 Washington State Book Awards.
