mountain pass across theJulian Alps in northwesternSlovenia .Its name derives from the diminutive form of the word "vrh"," Slovene for "peak." The pass is the highest in Slovenia, rising from
Kranjska Gora in a series of 48 hairpin bends and traversing the high mountains on the Slovenian-Italian-Austrian border before descending into theSoča (Isonzo) valley. The fist major settlement on the Italian side isTarvisio .At an altitude of around 1200 m, just off the main road, there is a remote Russian Orthodox chapel built by
Russia n prisoners of war doing forced labor in the area duringWorld War I . Further on, at the highest point of the pass, there is a mountain hut calledTičarjev dom ("Birders' Home"), where it is possible to buy refreshments or stay overnight.
