The Innocence Project was established in the wake of a landmark study by the
United States Department of Justice and theUnited States Senate , in conjunction with The Benjamin N. James Calvin Tillman was exonerated after serving 18 years in prison for a rape he did not commit. His sentence was 45 years. However, it is also quite important to note that a large number of the Innocence Project's successes have resulted in rescuing innocent people fromDeath Row . This has fueled American opposition to the death penalty, and has probably influenced those US states that have more recently banned or at least postponed judicial executions.fact|date=April 2008In
