Stephen Mangan (born 22 July 1972 in London [http://community.channel4.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/6590012924/m/4950023444] ) is an English actor, best known for his roles as Guy Secretan in the television series "Green Wing", and Dan Moody in I'm Alan Partridge.

Biography

Mangan grew up in Winchmore Hill, north London and attended Haileybury College, Hertfordshire in the same year as Dom Joly. After gaining a Bachelor of Arts in Law at Gonville and Caius College Cambridge University, where his friends included Rachel Weisz and Sue Perkins, Mangan took a year out to nurse his mother, Mary, who was dying of cancer. Weeks after her death, he auditioned for the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He graduated from RADA in July 1994 and did not pursue lead roles on screen, preferring to take what he saw as the less limited opportunities on the stage. He appeared in Billy Elliot but has said that he didn't immediately realise because when he shot the film it was called Dancer.

His breakthrough television performance was as Adrian Mole in the six-part BBC TV show series "Adrian Mole: The Cappuccino Years" in 2001.

His distinctive voice is now becoming popular for voice-overs in television advertisements, including for Barclaycard, in which he stars with Green Wing co-star, Julian Rhind-Tutt. He is also known from his appearances in a series of televised advertisements for the instant coffee brand, Nescafe. On television, he will next appear "Never Better" (2008) and an untitled Victoria Pile project (2008), as well as the film "Bono, Bob, Brian and Me" (2007).

He will next work on "Bitter & Twisted" for Channel 4 and in 2008 will play the title role in "The Norman Conquests" at the Old Vic.

He is married to the actress Louise Delamere and they had a son, Harry, in October 2007.

He was known to improvise often whilst filming scenes for Green Wing often making it harder for other actors on set to continue without corpsing. For example, in a scene where he has to paint a wall for community service, in order to seem more common to the other criminal in the scene he puts on a thick londoner accent and improvises bits where he can't be bothered to paint so throws the whole pot onto the wall. It is visible in the final scene to see his co-star giggling in the background due to his comedic spontaneity.
