Shiphay Manor is a Manor house in Torquay, Devon, England.

History

Originally erected in around 1665, the manor was sold to William Kitson of Painsford in 1740, and then torn down and rebuilt in 1884. [Percy Russell, "A History Of Torquay" (Torquay: Devonshire Press Limited, 1960), 168-169]

Shiphay Manor is currently owned by Torquay Grammar School for Girls. A large room on the ground floor is used as a Lower Sixth common room, shared with Torquay Boys' Grammar School.

The building is also used to teach Psychology to students of both Torquay Boys' Grammar School and Torquay Grammar School for Girls Sixth Forms.

During the 1960s and 70s part of the Manor house itself was used as a high class private members nightclub.

The expansive stable blocks along with the front, side and back paddocks were run as the highly successful Shiphay Manor riding school by popular local characters Mr & Mrs Heggadon in the 1960s/70s.

In the parkland approach to the Manor are many beautiful trees dating back hundreds of years.
