Anne Catherine Hoof Green
- Anne Catherine Hoof Green
Anne Catherine Hoof Green (c. 1720 – March 23, 1775) was a printer and publisher.
Anne Hoof was most likely born in the Netherlands around 1720. She emigrated to America and lived in Annapolis, Maryland. Her husband, Jonas Green (c. 1720-1767) died in 1767, and she operated his printing business. The business published the "Maryland Gazette" and was Maryland's official printer. Anne Green was sympathetic to the revolution and the "Maryland Gazette" contained early attacks on British rule. Green had her portrait painted by Charles Willson Peale after he returned to America in 1769 from several years of study in London. After her husband died, leaving her in huge debt, Anna Catherine Hoof Green ran the "Maryland Gazette" with her sons until her death.
