John Swift (American)

John Swift (b. 27 June 1790, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; d. 9 June 1873, Philadelphia) was an American lawyer and politician and long-time Mayor of Philadelphia. He was admitted to the bar in 1810. He was a leader of the Whigs of Philadelphia and served as mayor 1832-1838, 1839-1841, and 1845-1849. In 1840, Swift became the first mayor to be elected in popular elections. He is buried at Christ Church Burial Ground.
