USS Eugene A. Greene

USS Eugene A. Greene

The United States Navy has assigned the name USS "Eugene A. Greene" to two ships, in honor of Ensign Eugene A. Greene (1921–1942), who was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for his heroism in the Battle of Midway.

* The first, "Eugene A. Greene" (DE-549), would have been a destroyer escort, but her construction was canceled in 1944.

* The second, "Eugene A. Greene" (DD-711), was a "Gearing"-class destroyer, launched in 1945 and transferred to Spain in 1972. Renamed "Churruca" she was finally stricken in 1989.
