Xun Chen the protector of Ji during the Three Kingdoms Period in early Chinese history. [The Three Kingdoms period is part of an era of disunity called the Six Dynasties; refers to the period between the foundation of the Wei in 220 and the conquest of the Wu by the Jin Dynasty in 280. Many historians extend the period's beginning to the Yellow Turbans uprising in 184.] Chen along with the general Gao Gan both persuaded the governor Han Fu (d.191) to relinquish Ji to the powerful warlord Yuan Shao (d.202). Later on, Xun Chen became a skilled retainer under Yuan Shao, battling on the frontlines during many campaigns against rival warlord Cao Cao, which began in 200. According to official history, Xun Chen was the younger brother of the well known Xun Yu, who was one of Cao Cao's greatest advisors .
