Yoram Kaniuk (1930- ) is an
Israeli writer, painter, journalist, and theater critic. His books have been translated into 25 languages and he is the recipient of many literary prizes.Biography
Yoram Kaniuk, son of Moshe Kaniuk, of
Ternopil ,Galicia (Central Europe) , who became the first director of the Tel Aviv Museum, was born inTel Aviv in1930 . At the age of 17 years, he enlisted in thePalmach . After being wounded in Israel's War of Independence in1948 , he spent a decade in New York. Kaniuk has published 17 novels, a memoir, seven collections of short stories, two books of essays and five books for children and youth. His books have been published abroad in 25 languages, and he has won many literary prizes, among them the Ze`ev Prize for Children`s literature (1980), the Prix des Droits de l'Homme (France, 1997), the President`s Prize (1998) and theBialik Prize (1999).
