Joseph H. Burckhalter

Joseph H. Burckhalter (October 9, 1912 – May 9, 2004) was a chemist who worked in the field of isothiocyanate compounds.

He was born in Columbia, South Carolina, and earned a B.S. in chemistry from the University of South Carolina in 1934, an M.S. in organic chemistry from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, in 1938, and a Ph.D. in medicinal chemistry from the University of Michigan in 1942. He then went to work for Parke-Davis. From the pain-relieving drug now Tylenol, he derived Camoquin, a treatment for malaria. Burckhalter was a professor of medicinal chemistry at the University of Michigan from 1960 to 1983. Since 1983 he was a research professor at Florida Institute of Technology.
