HIBS was founded in
1991 as a private school, and was then known as Hutt Independent Boys' School. The school was briefly sited inSilverstream ,Upper Hutt . However, in1994 the school moved to Trentham,Upper Hutt on land previously used by theWellington Racing Club and opted for state integration, keeping its 'special character' as anAnglican -faith based school. A major construction programme was started in2004 , and just recently the final stage of it has been finished, which was the auditorium.ister schools

The school has operated a house system since 1996, similar to that used in English public schools. Each house is named after an iconic New Zealander: Freyberg (named after
Bernard Freyberg ), Halberg (named afterMurray Halberg ), Rutherford (named afterErnest Rutherford ), and Hillary (named afterEdmund Hillary ). These houses compete against each other, in friendly competition for the house cup in a number of events throughout the year. These events include: Octathalon, Relay For Life, Swimming, Touch, Basketball, Football, Volleyball, Singing, Hill Run, and Academic Progress.Information technology
The new group SITU (Student Information Technology Unit) allows students to help work with teachers in the IT area. They will help basic issues teachers may face and aid teachers in certain IT tasks. As an incentive, the students learn more in their area of expertise from the HIBS IT technicians, as well as sometimes going to externally run courses in their particular area, paid for by the school.
