- Kalderash
Caldarari, Kotlyary is the name for one of subgroups of Roma; this subgroup is widespread in the world. They were traditionally smiths and metal workers. Their name means "
cauldron makers" in Romanian [ [http://romani.humanities.manchester.ac.uk/files/11_names.shtml History of the Romani language, Names - ROMANI Project Manchester ] ] . Many Roma living inRomania have the surname "Caldararu" which means they or their ancestors belong to this clan. [http://www.smithsonianeducation.org/migrations/gyp/gypstart.html] .The Caldarari of
Ukraine andRussia call themselves Kotlyary (which means also "cauldron makers" in Ukrainian). They spread throughout Ukraine migrating fromBessarabia to the north and east. There are about two hundred thousand Caldarari living in Romania, although the exact number isn't known.
Nowadays, due to industrialisation, metalcraft is no longer as profitable, so the Caldarari people have diversified their sources of income, though often they remain in
metallurgy .The Kalderash traditional dress is one of the most famous Romani traditional dresses, and is still worn. They usually marry very young (age 12-15), and have very strict contamination customs.
