Arapahoe City

Arapahoe City

Arapahoe City was one of the first permanent towns of Colorado. Situated on the north side of Clear Creek west of today's McIntyre Street just southeast of North Table Mountain, Arapahoe City was established on November 29, 1858. Populated by early gold seekers who dug gold from the placer bar there, it became a base camp for those miners seeking the mother lode in the mountains from which those deposits came. Prominent early Coloradans including George Andrew Jackson and John Hamilton Gregory, each of whom made critical gold discoveries that set off the gold rush in 1859, lived at Arapahoe City. The town itself consisted of a collection of log and frame buildings, some of which survived into the early 20th Century. Arapahoe City itself, named for the Arapaho tribe after chiefs threatened the settlement, did not last beyond 1861 as nearby settlements and the Civil War Depression took hold. Today nothing is known to remain from Arapahoe City except today's West 44th Avenue, but a historical marker stands at its exact site.
