The Sisi Chapel was built to honor the marriage of the Imperial couple Elisabeth and
Franz Joseph I onApril 24 ,1854 , in Vienna. Johann Carl Freiherr von Sothen commissioned architect Johan A. Garben with the design of the "Am Himmel" Chapel in an area of the Wienerwald in Sievering. Besides a memorial to the historic event, the chapel was also to serve as the gravesite for the client and his wife Franziska. The chapel was constructed according to Garben's plans in 1854-1856 under the city builder Josef Kastan. After the chapel's completion, it was consecrated onJuly 31 , 1856, to the patron saints of the imperial couple: St. Elisabeth,St. Francis of Assisi , andSt. Joseph .References
