Akhil Kumar (born March 27, 1981) is an Indian boxer from Bhiwani, Haryana.

Career

Akhil Kumar was born in Faizabad, Uttar Pradesh [http://in.jagran.yahoo.com/news/local/uttarpradesh/4_1_4728947.html] . He received his initial training at Bhiwani Boxing Club. One of the biggest influences in his career has been that of coach Jagdish Singh, whom Akhil respects a lot [http://www.tribuneindia.com/2008/20080816/haryana.htm#15] .

2004 - 2006

At the Olympics 2004 he lost in the first round to Jerome Thomas. In 2005, he won the gold medal at the 4th Commonwealth Federation Boxing Championships, Glasgow. He defeated Bongani Mahalangu of South Africa by a narrow margin of 18-17 in the 54 kg final [cite web|url=http://www.tribuneindia.com/2005/20050822/sports.htm|title=Indian Boxers Win Commonwealth Title|publisher=The Tribune|date=August 21, 2005|accessdate=2008-08-17] .

He won the gold medal in the Bantamweight 54 kg category at the 2006 Commonwealth Games by edging out Nigerian Nestor Bolum and defeating Mauritian southpaw Bruno Julie in the final.

2008 Beijing Olympics

Akhil qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games beating among others, the silver medallist from the 2004 Summer Olympics - Worapoj Petchkoom at the Asian boxing qualifying tournament in Bangkok.

At the Olympic event, he made his way to the second round in the Bantamweight 54 kg category beating Frenchman Ali Hallab on points 12-5. In the round of 16, he controversially beat current World Champion Sergey Vodopyanov coming from 2-6 down in the second round of the bout. The score was tied 9-9 at the end of the fourth round but the judges' decision went in Akhil's favor on account of having landed a greater number of punches [http://results.beijing2008.cn/WRM/ENG/INF/BX/C73/BXM054406.shtml#BXM054406] . He lost 3-10 to Veaceslav Gojan of Moldova in the quarter finals on August 18th, 2008.

Awards

Akhil received the Arjuna award in 2005.
