- Treaty of London (1604)
The Treaty of London, signed in
1604 , concluded the twenty year Anglo-Spanish War. The negotiations took place atSomerset House inLondon and are sometimes known as the Somerset House Conference. After the death of Queen Elizabeth in
1603 , her successor's, James I, first order of business was to end the long and draining conflict.Philip III of Spain , who also had inherited the war from his predecessor, Philip II, warmly welcomed the offer and ordered the commencement of the difficult negotiations that followed. The Anglo-Spanish war had been a long, complex and fluctuating conflict that was also connected with conflicts in the Netherlands, France and Ireland. The terms were favourable to
Spain , bringing to an end English support to the Dutch rebellion since theTreaty of Nonsuch , and the end of attacks upon Spanish sea trade, but it also amounted to an acknowledgement by Spain that its hopes of restoring Roman Catholicism in England were at an end. Related negotiations with the Irish rebels also saw an end to the ban on Roman Catholic affiliation and worship in Ireland.England and Spain remained at peace until their forces met briefly, in the
