Aimhigher

Aimhigher

, particularly among students from non-traditional backgrounds, minority groups and disabled persons.

Aimhigher is an initiated by the former Department for Education and Skills (DfES) now the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS) working with the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).

Aimhigher was created in 2004 through the integration of two earlier initiatives, Partnerships for Progression (P4P) and Excellence Challenge, bringing together a wide range of partners, including universities, colleges, schools, training providers and the Connexions service. Currently funded through to the end of July 2008 the government has announced that the programme will continue to be funded in some form to at least 2011.

Aimhigher operates in England on a national, regional and area basis, including:

A range of projects at national level

Nine regions undertaking cross-regional activities (Although this regional structure will end in July 2008)

45 areas where most of the planning and delivery takes place

The Aimhigher student portal website [link: http://www.aimhigher.ac.uk/] contained information for those people thinking about entering higher education in England and Wales and aimed to bring together necessary information from which prospective students can make decisions about institutions and courses, and financial matters.

The site was created and managed by HERO Ltd, who produce the Higher Education and Research Opportunities in the UK ( [http://www.hero.ac.uk/ HERO] ) website.

In January 2007 the Aimhigher.ac.uk site was listed on a list of central government websites earmarked for closure. Material from the site was used to augment provision on ( [http://www.direct.gov.uk/uni/ Directgov] ) with the site closing at the end of May 2008.
