Peter John Wilby (born 7 November 1944) is a British journalist.
Wilby was educated at Kibworth Beauchamp grammar school in Leicestershire ["Who's Who in the Press Gang", "The Independent", London, 28 August 2006.] before graduating with a degree in History from the University of Sussex, where he helped found a short-lived university paper called "Sussex Outlook". In 1968 he started writing for "The Observer". ["My Greatest Mistake", "The Independent", London, 8 October 2002.] He was Education Correspondent of the "New Statesman" in the 1970s ["My Mentor", "The Independent", London, 3 October 2005.] and for the "Sunday Times" in the 1980s. Wilby joined "The Independent on Sunday" in 1990 and eventually became its editor (1995-96). Subsequently he was editor of the "New Statesman" from 1998 to 2005, when he was dismissed, but still writes a weekly column for the journal. He now also writes for "The Observer" and "The Guardian".
