WHLT is the CBS affiliate for Hattiesburg, Laurel and southern Mississippi. It is owned by Media General and is generally a satellite of Jackson's WJTV with local ads and station identification messages.

It is one of three local stations broadcasting in Hattiesburg. Its transmitter is located near the suburb of Petal.

History

WHLT signed on in June 1987 as a satellite of WJTV, as a way to expand its coverage area into southern Mississippi, while taking advantage of local advertising and, news opportunities. In 1997, Media General acquired both WJTV and WHLT (as well as Savannah's WSAV-TV) from Raycom Media in a swap for Richmond's WTVR-TV. WHLT's news gathering efforts are mainly simulcasts of WJTV's newscasts with segments contributed by WHLT reporters. However it tried various attempts at establishing its own news department. The latest attempt, "22 Daily News", which had the same branding and slogan ("It's About Time.") to the "42 Daily News" product at then-sister station WIAT in Birmingham, Alabama, was discontinued due to low commercial support despite good ratings and winning news awards. Its current slogan is ("Your Very Own").

Former 22 Daily News personalities include news anchor Blaine Stewart, who now reports at WTKR-TV (CBS) in Norfolk/Virginia Beach, VA, Mia Butler who hosts TBS's "Movie and a Makeover", Forecaster Rex Thompson, now at WDAM-TV in Laurel, MS, and Joe Wiggins, now a Southern Baptist pastor in Louisiana.

Programming

WHLT clears all CBS programming, but pre-empts CBS News Sunday Morning in favor of paid religious programming and delay Face the Nation to 1:05AM. Monday Morning. This is unlike its parent station, WJTV, which shows both programs as fed by CBS, from 8AM to 10AM.
