The German University in Cairo (GUC) ( _ar. الجامعة الألمانية بالقاهرة, transliteration: "al-gāmaaʿa al-almāniyya bil-Qāhira"), is an Egyptian Private University established in cooperation with some German state universities of as well as some of the German and Egyptian educational institutions [cite web |url=http://www.guc.edu.eg/about_guc/about_guc.htm |title=Establishment |accessdate=2008-03-05] .It is the first German university outside Germany. History

The German University in Cairo was founded in October 2003 with Dr. Ashraf Mansour as a prime founder. University of Ulm and University of Stuttgart were the patron universities and the main partners, the University of Mannheim and University of Tübingen joined as cooperation partners. Philosophy

GUC adopts the Total Quality Management philosophy with respect to [cite web |url=http://www.guc.edu.eg/about_guc/about_guc.htm |title=Mission & Philosophy |accessdate=2008-03-05] :
* Students and Alumni: Offering top quality education for students to ensure complete satisfaction during the whole course of study at GUC and upon graduation, either with a job placement or with further postgraduate studies.
* Parents: Ensuring complete satisfaction of parents with respect to cost-benefit relationship as well as their children's welfare.
* Staff: Providing training, development and continuous improvement for staff (academic and non-academic) to ensure the highest performance standards of education and research output.
* Community: Offering social activities and community services to contribute to the social and economic well being of its local and national community.
* Business: Serving and developing partnership with local, national and international business and industrial sectors as employers of GUC graduates as well as through research projects, training and as partners in developing knowledge, practice and applications.
* Patrons and Partner Universities: Developing, strengthening and expanding the mutual and multilateral relations with respect to teaching, research and exchange of students based on quality, intensity and mutual benefits and interests.

Cooperation between the GUC and its partners

It is agreed between GUC and the Universities of Ulm and Stuttgart on [cite web |url=http://www.guc.edu.eg/about_guc/about_guc.htm |title=Patron Universities |accessdate=2008-03-05] :
* The study program will be approved by both sides to fulfill all requirements of the German and Egyptian university degrees as well as to meet the international standards .
* The Universities of Ulm and Stuttgart intend to provide the GUC with the required technical assistance as well as the teaching staff according to their capacity. However, in case of lack in personnel numbers, they will assist in selecting qualified German staff from other German institutions.
* The Universities of Ulm and Stuttgart will assist in assuring the quality of teaching in cooperation with GUC. In addition, it is planned to cooperate with other German universities in teaching and quality assurance.
* The teaching language is English, while basic German language will be taught to allow for internships and mutual exchange of students with German universities.

System of study and Social Life

GUC adopts the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). Its credit point system is used as the basis for transferring grades and credits for student records to create international curricular compatibility, facilitating academic recognition according to the European standards. The GUC concerns not only about the studying but also it has a great social life between the students. This is represented in various Societies and Clubs such as "The BigBuddy Society, Pioneers, Zusammen,and Die Sonne" that are within the GUC, this allows students to perform extracurricular activities, and events under the supervision of the GUC admistration. These clubs and societies have been a great aid to their fellow students, not only in the extracurricular activities but in their studies as well. Their concept is that older students must help their younger buddies in adopting to the GUC life.
