- Calligraphism
Calligrafi films are novel adaptations. They are elegant films that rely heavily on detail.
Although most of the directors had immunity from censorship and did not fight the system, they did add subtle criticisms in their calligrafi films. An example would be Camerini's film adaptation of Manzoni's 1840 novel 'I Promessi Sposi'. The film contained many fascist traits such as the redemption of the antagonist through religious intervention, however, this character is potentially revolutionary and does pose a threat to the government (subtle criticism to fascist ideology).
