Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, University of Melbourne

The Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences of University of Melbourne provides undergraduate and postgraduate coursework and research programs in medicine, audiology, optometry, dental science, physiotherapy, nursing, behavioural science (psychology), population health, rural health and the life sciences.

The faculty's history dates back to the establishment of the School of Medicine in 1862. It is one of the oldest and most prestigious medical schools in Australia. It was established primarily through the work of Anthony Colling Brownless, an English physician. He was determined to make it the most comprehensive medical course in the world and as such, the course was five-years at a time during which medical courses around the world were 4 years. This trend has continued to this day with University of Melbourne having one of the longest undergraduate medical degrees.

In 1887, John Iliffe, a leading Melbourne dentist, called meetings to establish a dental hospital. The Melbourne Dental Hospital was established and the first students were admitted in 1890. In 1891 the first females trained and registered as doctors graduated from the university.
