"Sex and Candy" was a large hit in 1998, spending a then-record fifteen weeks at number one on the U.S. Modern Rock Tracks chart (the record was previously held by Oasis for their 1995 hit "Wonderwall"). It was also the band's only major pop hit, reaching number eight on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was voted number 73 on VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of the 90's. Covers and parodies

It was parodied on the popular television sketch show "Saturday Night Live" by Jimmy Fallon on Weekend Update featuring lyrics changed to go with a Halloween theme. It is also featured in the "Weird Al" Yankovic polka medley, Polka Power!.
