Hawk (birdman)

Hawk the birdman is a character from the second season of "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century" and the alien sidekick to Buck Rogers. He is portrayed in the TV series by Thom Christopher.

Character

Having experienced his people killed at the hands of drunken humans, Hawk declares war on the entire human race, attacking any human space ship he encounters. This is eventually brought to the attention of Buck Rogers who is ordered to capture Hawk. During the chase Hawk's mate, Koori, gets lethally injured and Buck and Hawk join forces in trying to get her to a healer. She dies, but Hawk is impressed by the fact that Buck offered his help. Having learned that not all humans are evil, Hawk joins with the Earth forces and goes with Buck on many adventures.

He wears black, has a head full of feathers instead of hair and speaks in an archaic and solemn fashion similar to the muppet Sam the Eagle.

Performance

To help develop the character of "Hawk" Thom Christopher read books on bird mannerisms, visited the birds section of the American Museum of Natural History and observed real life hawks in the Central Park zoo. Hawk has excellent flying instincts, which he inherited from his ancestors, he is extremely good pilot, better even than Buck Rogers. He piloted a one man spaceship that was designed to look like a predatory bird with retractable grappling talons. The talons are used in "Time of the Hawk" he uses them to grab and destroy spaceships, and he accidentally injures Koori with them in his fight against Buck, also in "Testimony of a Traitor", Hawk uses them to stop a marine from pursuing Buck.
