- Texaphyrin
Texaphyrin is a sub-class of heterocyclic
macrocycle molecule s known asporphyrin s. The molecule was invented byUniversity of Texas at Austin professorJonathan Sessler . The name texaphryin arose because some of the molecules have a shape that can superimpose onto the points of the star featured on thestate flag of Texas [ [http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/full/279/5355/1307b Science/AAAS | Science Magazine: Sign In ] ] . Texaphyrins were nominated as the "State Molecule of Texas", but thebuckyball was chosen instead [ [http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/tlo/75R/billtext/HC00083H.HTM] Dead link|date=March 2008] .Sessler has described possible medicinal uses of these compounds in the "
Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences " and other scientific journals. Pharmacyclics, Inc., a publicly-traded company begun by Sessler, licensed the technology behind texaphyrins from the university in order to develop commercial and medical uses for the molecules. Two predicted applications will be in neoplastic and cardiovascular disease.ee also
