Ankenes

Ankenes

Ankenes is a former municipality in Nordland county, Norway.

From 1837 Ankenes constituted Ofoten formannskapsdistrikt together with the district of Evenes ("Evindnæs"). On January 1, 1884 Ofoten was split, making Ankenes and Evenes separate municipalities. Ankenes had 1 734 inhabitants at this point.

On January 1, 1902 the city of Narvik with 3 705 inhabitants was separated from Ankenes to form a separate municipality. The split left Ankenes with a population of 3 023.

On January 1, 1974 Ankenes became a part of Narvik. At that point Ankenes had a population of 7 022 inhabitants, Narvik had 12 758.
